David’s Beachside Blog Post

Posted by on June 7, 2011

David here, we spent our first full day here in Pajaro Dunes.  We started out with a couple quick walks to the beach and then headed into town to get some breakfast and an old trucker diner.  After breakfast we went in search of a grocery store which was quite hard to find.  Finally we found one in a modern chain store sanctuary.  After loading up on food for the week we trekked back home.  The weather had turned out a little nicer than we expected so we went out on the beach to read [and nap].

Almost immediately upon getting out there it got overcast.  Dad tried surfing on our boogie board with no luck and Sarah gave it a shot as well.

When it got too cold for the women they headed in and Dad and I stayed out to read some more.  The tide kept coming in and before we knew it our spot on the beach was underwater!  We grabbed up all our stuff as fast as we could and headed back in.  Not too much else exciting happened.  Mom and Dad rode bikes while Sarah and I went on a walk.  We found a foosball table and I thoroughly embarrassed Sarah by beating her 10-0.  Finally our lazy beach day wound down as we barbecued out on the porch.  Ah the vacation life!

Sarah’s Version:

As I write, my sweet husband is passed out next to me on the couch from the terrible exertion of writing that blog … and maybe the trials of a day of beach relaxation. All around us, family are curled up in arm chairs reading their books while my fingers quietly tap away at the keyboard and the Pacific Ocean waves crash on the beach below our rented house. As David so eloquently explained, our first day of vacation within a vacation was relaxing and mostly peaceful – except for the big wave that soaked his and his fathers’ little rumps as they sat reading on the beach.

While Mom Glenn and I watched from the house, a seal poked its head out of the water just in time to giggle at the shocked and wet men.

Later that afternoon, our walk up the beach took us past flocks of pelicans, kids being tossed by the waves and countless empty crab shells – the victims of circling seagulls.

As far as the foosball, I have no defense. David whooped me fair and square on that dilapidated old table.

All in all, it was a beautiful day and a great start to a fun week.

Next on the agenda: Monterey Bay Aquarium!
