How ya likin’ Pokey?

So, raise your hands. How many of my friends thought that I’d end up settling in Pocatello, Idaho?
Let me tell you, I never would’ve guessed.
I get asked fairly often (probably just to make conversation) how I am liking Pocatello. As I am ever-willing to over-answer a simple question here’s a full-on blog post. 😉

I look around our little townhome and feel sheer wonder at how blessed we are. Since moving here, a thousand little things have happened to make us feel like Idaho was the right place for us. We are close enough that only David’s schedule stands in the way of visiting family whenever we want. But even at that, we are attending his cousin’s wedding and the family reunion. Our family members have already come to us several times. There are stunning hikes everywhere. Tons of open range. Ski resorts an hour (max) in every direction. The city park has bouldering/rock climbing walls. Despite not having a Target, Pocatello seems to have everything else shopping-wise that I would ever want. There are parks (and kids Sawyer’s age) a-plenty. The university does Shakespeare in the park in the summer as well as live music in the evening. If I wanted to take classes at ISU it’s $5 per credit. Yes. $5. And did I mention everyone is ridiculously nice?  That said…

Pocatello is small and rural.

My tummy still does a little turn when I hear people refer to this place by the oh-so-sophisticated name of Poky. I still prefer calling my new home Poke-A-Fellow.

It’s hard to say if I am in love with the area yet. I don’t know if anything will replace Redlands’ special place in my heart. But here are some simple experiences that paint a picture of what this community seems to be all about on first impression.

  • We had a problem with our dryer when it was delivered. So until our new one arrived a family up the street (who is also one of the interns with David) offered their dryer. When they went out of town for the weekend, they offered to drop a key at our place just in case we needed the dryer. We didn’t end up needing it, but the fact that they offered floored me. We had known them for a total of one week! Our neighbors have been such sweet and invaluable friends.
  • I called the DMV when I got here to see what documents I would need to register my car. A live person picked up on the second ring. When I asked her how much time I should set aside, she laughed at me. “Oh honey, you won’t need more than 15 minutes.” I only needed five. Guess how much it was to register and re-title my car? $90. Total. For two years. Holy cheap!
  • The parking spaces at shopping centers here are huge! Pretty sure they are expecting a tractor.
  • It is not uncommon to be the only person in the mall parking lot at any given entrance. And yes, it has been the middle of the day.
  • Others who live in Idaho consider Pocatello a big city.
  • Everybody packs a gun around here. Seriously, I’ve walked down main street and counted about five people openly carrying.
  • This is the only city I’ve lived in where you can see a marmot checking out the storefronts on Main Street.
  • Everyone here is ridiculously nice and down to earth.
  • The residency has the most legitimate Significant Others group that I’ve seen since Grenada. I feel like I could reach out to any of these women (and men) any time and they would help in a heartbeat.
  • Finally, David is happy. Like, really happy.

So how do I like Pocatello? I know it’s the right place for us. For sure.

Saturday hike day

Explored a couple of nature trails in the Caribou National Forest today.

Vroom vroom

We used one of those obnoxiously large race car carts grocery shopping the other day. Although it was awkward to maneuver, the kiddo was just so darn cute in it!

A life-changing decision

I’ve been trying recently to craft a beautiful and eloquent blog post on my struggle to balance career and motherhood. Mostly trying to sort through my thoughts after turning down a full-time reporter’s position.

I scrapped that blog post after seeing this video. It says it all.

The decision to scale back my career (for now) was agonizing. I love what I do, almost to the point of addiction. There was, as David can attest, a full-scale meltdown when I thought of what I was giving up. I (like many other driven women I know) get a rush out of conquering a challenge, doing the impossible and being busy. In addition, we have a mountain of debt that would make anyone but Warren Buffet assume the fetal position. We are going to be broke-as-a-joke apartment dwellers for many years to come.

But that’s OK. Our lives have seasons. This one is dominated by poopy diapers, grocery store meltdowns and baby giggles. Things are going to be tight. And the knot in my stomach over not achieving my full professional potential probably won’t go away. But the moments are going to be priceless.

This decision isn’t right for everyone. But it was right for me, in my situation at this time in my life.

I think …

Just as a side note, the editor is letting me do stories one day a week on a freelance basis. Can’t kick my journalism habit that easy. Maybe I need a 12-step program…

A Saturday morning hike

While the hubs was recovering post-call, Sawyer and I wandered to the top of our street to explore the hills above our home.
While not the most tree-lined hiking trails, the views from the top were beautiful. I’m so glad I have a place so close to wander and get a little dirt under the shoes 🙂

9, 10, 11 months? Eh, forget it!

Sawyer is 11 months old today. Just 30 days shy of that first big boy birthday.
The past three months have obviously been a little hectic.
Ok, they’ve been insanity on crack.

20140712-142856-52136596.jpg
I’ll try to update on the milestones the best I can, but they may only be highlights.

9 months:

Traveled to Reno for Emily and Skylers wedding where sawyer met his betrothed (Gemma).

20140712-141743-51463615.jpg
We attempted to cut sawyers hair. Our little screaming Sampson would have none of it.
Auntie + buzzers + exhausted baby = the biggest screaming meltdown I have ever seen him have. We managed one sideburn before we had to call it quits. Oh well, lopsided hair is in these days, right?

10 Months:

He was in the Big Apple celebrating daddy’s medical school graduation. This might have been where he tried to take his first little shuffle of a step.

11 months:

Hangin’ with the Hayes up in Shelley today. At almost a year, our little man is taking a few steps here and there, but plops the second the phone comes out to document it all.
Some other milestones include:

  • A killer appetite. He can pack away three scrambled eggs, a piece of bread and a banana for breakfast without batting an eye.
  • Says “mama”, “dada” and we think possibly nana (banana) and juice.
  • Shakes his head no when he knows he is doing something wrong.
  • Is into everything!
  • Never stops moving and considers mommy a jungle gym on which to climb.
  • But still takes a solid two naps a day and sleeps (usually) through the night.
  • Is a whopping 21.5 lbs of pure baby muscle!

So as for those monthly pictures, we are canning that adventure.

Legos and Ligaments

On a billboard over Times Square, I saw a man made of yellow Legos ripping open his chest.

Brick-stack+yellow+sig

Hmmm, Legos and anatomy. Sounds like something David would enjoy. So for (part) of his graduation gift we choked down the ticket price for the Times Square Discovery Museum and took a peek.

It was stunning. Nathan Sawaya, a former lawyer turned artist, uses Lego bricks as his medium.  Nothing but Lego bricks. We took pictures of just about everything, so I’ll let the art speak for itself.

 [oqeygallery id=34]

The Discovery Museum was also hosting an exhibit of BodyWorlds, ya know that artwork where they flay and plasticize people’s dead bodies and put them on display. Through tables full of livers and lungs, David gave us the grand tour of the human body and it’s inner workings. Though you aren’t technically allowed to take pictures in order to protect the privacy of those who donated their bodies, there are some we snapped that are worth sharing.

It’s hard to see the details, but all those little vials behind Sawyer are embryos in various stages of development – some at five weeks others at 10 weeks. It was humbling to think that Sawyer was in one of those tiny stages less than two years ago. Now he is my world. It really reaffirmed my belief in the sanctity of life.

Graduation adventures in NYC

On a steamy New York City summer day, a little blonde-haired boy took a bite out of the big apple. Literally.

2014-07-11 12.35.26

Our first night in, we walked down to Times Square where Grandpa Glenn procured this kitchy big stuffed apple from the Toys R Us store. It was cute, cheap and amused Sawyer for hours.

I thought Sawyer would be a little overwhelmed by the crush of people and noise, but after a while he seemed to handle it better than we did.

Times Square selfies!

“Is this structurally sound, dad?”

2014-06-12 20.27.24

If it weren’t so expensive, I would have loved to look around this place. It’s a macabre museum on 42nd of the scary medical stuff people used to do back in the day.  Appropriate for a medical school graduation trip, no? 😉

2014-06-13 11.07.40

Instead we went to The Art of the Brick and BodyWorlds. Appropriate for David, yes? 😉 You can read about that here.

The next day was graduation! But not until the afternoon, so we wandered Central Park for a while. As we wandered the sidewalks, the majority of the other people were tramping though the underbrush. It took sitting next to a New York Post reporter (distinguishable by his notebook and rushed conversation) to find out what was really going on. Real Estate billionaire Jason Buzi thought it would be fun to hide envelopes of cash in major metropolitan cities and watch the frenzy ensue from behind the safety of an “anonymous” twitter handle (@HiddenCash) that gave vague clues. That morning, the Twitter chatter had led to Central Park. While it would have been wonderful to find one of those $50 bills, it was also fun to watch the madness. Crazy things happen when you tell big crowds there’s some easy money to be had!

Sawyer was Ok with the crush of people, but slightly overwhelmed by the Central Park merry-go-round.

2014-06-14 12.11.28

That afternoon, we got to watch David graduate from SGU, a newly minted medical doctor. It was a proud moment!

2014-06-14 17.41.12

On graduation eve, David’s parents watched Sawyer back at the hotel while we explored Hells Kitchen, and the rest of New York. We found this fun little Thai-French fusion restaurant where we took no pictures and David thought the food was just OK. After that, we wandered around, eventually needing a bathroom.  “Hey, Toys R Us should have a bathroom,” we thought.

It did.

One. … On the third floor, which is only accessible by one rickety elevator.

After finally making it through the ginormous line and conducting our “business”, we joined the crowd of people who were trying to get back down. Three car-loads later, we weren’t anywhere close to descending.  A perturbed employee said, “come with me.” We then travelled through the dingy back rooms and warehouses of the Times Square Toys R Us.  Now how many people can say they did that? Ha ha.

Eventually our wanderings led us to Manhattans finest gay bars, Planet Hollywood (where the neon handprints are on display) and we even found the Naked Cowboy.

When we returned, Sawyer was sleeping peacefully in his hotel cage … er, I mean crib.

One World Trade Center:

We didn’t go into the museum (and pay the hefty $24 ticket price that never sees the pockets of the families! I have some serious rants about that). But we did walk around the reflecting pools. There is still an incredible feeling there and I was overwhelmed with emotion at times remembering that day and my feelings about my country.

The finale to our day was a trip to the yummy and mouth-wateringly cheap Papaya Dog.

2014-06-16 12.34.18

This is not our first foray into the Big Apple and probably won’t be our last.  However, by the last day David and the folks were ready to kiss that noisy, smelly, busy city goodbye. A fabulously fun place to visit, but I prefer my wide open range, the smell of pine trees and my mountains made of dirt rather than steel.

See ya later you gorgeous city you! Muwah!

The Shiner

We’ve yet to catch them on camera, but our baby boy has taken his first hobbles.
His coordination is horrible. And he is, by nature, fearless.
So we are gonna get a few of these.

Maybe I’ll just get him a shirt that says, “you should see the other guy.” 😉
