Meet Dr. Glenn

On June 14th, David walked across the stage and officially became David W. Glenn, MD.  We are so proud of your hard work and what you have accomplished.

Looking back on the pictures from that day, I love that most of them aren’t just of David. He always seems to be holding Sawyer whenever the camera goes off. We are so thankful to be moving on to the next phase of our journey and I am especially thankful for a husband who will always be first and foremost, Dr. Dad.

Meeting Kinley!

June was a month full of firsts for Sawyer.

He got to go on his first plane ride.

2014-06-05 07.42.01

He did great considering what a wiggle worm he usually is. Security was better than I thought it would be, especially on the SLC side. He fell asleep on takeoff and spent much of the rest of the flight gleefully ripping through the in-flight magazines.

2014-06-05 09.07.16

And he got to meet his first (official)* cousin. Kinley is basically the most beautiful baby girl in the world and so much fun to cuddle with. I had forgotten how light new born babies are! I am so in love with that little girl and glad she gets to be a part of our extended family forever.

The crazy roundup

Have ya noticed I’ve been missing from the blog lately? There’s good reason. Moving stinks! In chronological order, here are the contents of our big pot of crazy.

1. In February we loaded up the moving truck and left Redlands. That little city of orange groves, tree-lined streets and incredible people will always hold a special place in my heart. It was very hard to leave and I still miss it dearly.

2. So began life on the road. David jetted off to Oakland for a month then Miami for another month.  In the meantime, I moved in with my sister and raised a baby in Reno with some newly-developed RIDICULOUS sleeping habits. Pretty sure I got 45 minute stints through March and April, but it’s really a blur so I couldn’t say for sure. 😉 This is also the time when my body decided to stop making milk for my little. I tried literally everything and it didn’t work. Stress does some incredible things to the body. There is no greater feeling of helplessness than listening to your child scream and writhe because your body can’t do something it was made to do. Don’t judge too quickly when you see the formula come out. That woman might be fighting a pretty stressful battle.

3. Somewhere in there I packed up our little Honda coupe to the brim and drove eight hours across Nevada over to Heber City, UT. I am so thankful that my mother in law flew out to help me make the trip!

4. The next months were spent organizing our move to Pocatello and looking for housing.  We Spent much of this time trying to find and buy our first home. This is still a pretty stressful (and somewhat divisive) topic, so I will just say that many factors including limited time and private student loan debt combined against us and we were not able to buy.

5. With our backup housing plan in place and less than two weeks until David’s residency began, we then travelled to Dallas, Texas to visit Matt, Jamie and meet their new baby girl!

6. From Dallas we flew back to Heber City and then out again to New York for David’s Medical School graduation.  David flew back a day early from that adventure for his first day as a Family Medicine Doctor. I followed across the country with baby in tow the next day and we have been unpacking and settling in ever since.

We have had so many adventures over the past months that I never want to forget. Here’s to another exciting ride!

Sawyer: Month 7

He is a world-class mover and just can’t seem to stay put. There’s a big wide world out there and he wants to explore all of it!

He pulls himself up to standing. This is the point at which I had enough. Stop growing!

His food repitoire has expanded and there doesn’t seem to be anything he dislikes at the moment. Although he’s probably only ingested a grand total of 1/4 cup of big boy food his whole life.

Those clogged tear ducts have cleared up! Yeah! No more eye gunk!

Sawyer: Month 8

2014-04-12 18.57.05 2014-04-12 18.58.44

With all of the turbulence in our lives lately, I have missed blogging on so much. More on that to come later … once things settle down.

In the meantime, here is what our little boy is up to at 8 months old:

Those oh-so-fine motor skills:

He never sits still. Ever. This little boy now packs a punch of personality and endless energy. He spends his days pulling himself up onto furniture, crawling on all fours at turbo speed around the house and bouncing up and down when he gets really excited. He prefers kneeling in what the yogis call Supta-Vajrasana or Fixed Firm Pose rather than sitting on his tush, which is something that I used to do as a kid all the time.

2014-03-14 17.07.26

He is thinking about standing without assistance, but hesitates when it comes time to commit. And our little boy is a climber. So far he has conquered the fireplace ledge and the open dishwasher. There is no fear in this child! He is also starting to use the pincher fingers to grab food from his high chair tray.

 On the food front:

Sawyer is eating all kinds of solid foods. We try to feed him whatever we are eating at dinner (within reason). He hates butternut squash, but loves to chew on bell pepper strips, zuchinis and cheerios. Other favorites are bananas, mangos and avocado each mixed with brown rice cereal. Although his absolute favorite foods of all time are pickled beats (yes, you heard that right) and those little baked goldfish. I refer to the fish as “baby crack.” He seriously lights up when he gets one or two on his tray!

And we officially have three teeth! Two on the top and one on the bottom.

Our kid has the sweetest personality of anyone in our family. For realsies.

He babbles all the time, but no real words yet. Sometimes I can pull off a little “conversation” with him and it cracks me up.

He throughly dislikes wearing clothes. Diapering and dressing him is a battle royale. Throughout the day he will tug on his pants as if to say, “Do I really have to wear these?” So when it is bath time, he is in little baby heaven.

2014-04-10 18.48.27

He is a tremendous flirt and seems to have a smile for everyone he meets. There are no strangers to Sawyer, just friends. He especially loves the swing these days and being outside on the grass. It is not hard to get this kid to smile.

We are learning what the word “No” means and we do not like it. He has thrown his first temper tantrum. When he wants something, he is one determined little boy!

And that brings us to sleep …

Since our move from Redlands, he has decided that sleeping is overrated. We have fought through two months of sleepless nights. Last night he hit a record, demanding attention every 45 minutes to an hour ALL NIGHT LONG. Part of that might be that the feeding trough that is mom is unfortunately drying up.

And yet here we are at 6 a.m. and he is happy as a clam and friendly and smiling. Mom, not so much.

We love you Sawyer and can’t wait to see what next month brings!

Sawyer: Month 6

Our sweet baby has blossomed into a handsome little man who packs a charming punch of personality. Month 6 was kind of a whirlwind between moving and David’s last day at Arrowhead. But here are some sweet moments I don’t want to forget!

2014-02-12 14.17.04

  • He smiles every time he (or someone else) sneezes.
  • In fact, he smiles all the time!
  • Have I mentioned that he is a ridiculous flirt? There’s always a smile for the ladies.
  • Sleeping through the night is a little hit or miss. Le sigh. I’m blaming the upheaval from the move.
  • He is getting pretty good at this scooting thing and loves playing with anything BUT his toys.
  • He has tried rice cereal, avocado, sweet potatoes, bananas and basically anything else we fancy giving him a nibble of. However, it’s all hit and miss and (for convenience sake) he is still mainly on milk.

The things I know

It’s just after sunrise on a Wednesday morning. By this time next week, all our things will be in boxes and ready for the moving truck. I’ll drink in that sunrise over our backyard palm trees one more time and say my goodbyes.

You would think moving gets easier after living five different places in less than four years. It doesn’t. In fact, leaving Redlands ranks with the hardest goodbyes I’ve had to say. I have loved this place, its small-town charm and what my family has become while living here. As we move forward, there are a lot of things I don’t know. But during this time of change, it’s important to write down and remember the things that I know beyond any doubt.

1. My Heavenly Father loves me and He is in the details of my life.

2. My little family is forever. Rain, shine, rich or poor, our home is our refuge and my one sure thing.

3. God needs me to make a difference in this world. I might not like it and it dang sure will make me uncomfortable. But someone, somewhere needs me to think outside myself, show compassion, listen, be a friend or share a smile. I wasn’t placed on this earth to live in ease. I am here to learn and grow.

So here we go. I’m about to take a deep breath and jump …

into a moving truck.

I’ll miss you Redlands. So very much. 2014-02-21 07.37.08

Thanksgiving 2013

We left for Utah after David finished at the hospital, getting on the road at 5 p.m. What lay ahead was a 10-hour drive with a full car and a fussy baby.

The welcome home hugs we got at 4 in the morning (yes, the family stayed up to welcome us) were well worth the drive.

It was a whirlwind trip, but reminded us just how much we had to be thankful for.

Sawyer: Month 5

Once again, we were on the road for Sawyer’s birthday this month. At five months old, this little man has been to four states and logged more than 3,000 miles in the car!

2014-01-11 07.41.58 2014-01-11 07.42.29 2014-01-11 07.42.51

So what has Sawyer been up to this month?

Well he wants to hold his own bottle now. He even directs it to his mouth.

Speaking of bottles, we’ve introduced solids just a few days after his five month birthday. Here’s that fun story 🙂

2014-01-15 11.07.23 2014-01-16 09.09.22

He’s still sleeping through the night and loves having his own space. Has graduated to the pack n’ play, which has made traveling so much easier.

He snuggles!! Sawyer has never been a snuggler. This kid loves his space and independence. But one night, after an especially exhausting few days of traveling, my crying baby put his head down on my shoulder and just snuggled for a good two or three minutes! He wasn’t even sleepy. Then he was up again and wanted to get down and play. But oh how momma loves her baby snuggles!

He went to the San Diego Zoo and was a very well-behaved little boy.

2013-12-28 16.10.20 2002-12-08 12.00.00

Played on the swings and the slide at the park for the first time in Arizona.

And … drumroll please …

He’s mobile

Sawyer hasn’t quite gotten the up-on-the-hands-and-knees action down yet, but that kid can scoot like nobody’s business. To say he is excited about his newfound mobility would be an understatement. We will lay out all his toys on the floor and you can see the little wheels in his mind turning.

“You mean all of this is mine and I get to pick which toy I want to go get?!?!?! AWESOME!”

We love you little man! Keep growing up strong and healthy!

Sawyer: Month 4

They say time flies. Well, it does. As of December 13, my little man is four whole months old!

2013-12-11 12.35.58

He spent that four-month birthday in Reno while daddy interviewed at UNR’s Family Medicine Program. On the drive there, he got to try his very first big-boy food – a lick of a pickle spear at Erik Schatts in Bishop. Although mommy and daddy thought they were being funny with the vinegary delicacy, the joke was on them when Sawyer loved it! He spent the rest of our meal trying to get at that pickle spear.

In addition to the new foods, this month he also learned a few new tricks.

First, he’s kinda excited about these toes. Not quite sure what they are good for yet, but these toys are permanently attached! Cool.

2014-01-16 14.32.34

We have a rolly poley bug! Although this was technically when he was already four months old, Sawyer has learned to roll over. Just a few days before Christmas, he got a little mad, arched his back and BAM it was tummy time. The discovery was so exciting that he’s been rolling all over the place ever since.

Also, don’t leave this little boy in just his diaper for too long! He has figured out that if he fiddles enough, he can undo the velcro and be free…

We love you so much Sawyer Timothy and are excited to see you grow!
