The post-pregnancy skinny

image

Why hello size 4! Momma has sure missed you.
It  was sure a struggle to get these puppies on this morning. But even with the slight pinching around my midline, it feels dang good to reach a goal.
I recently added a certificate in pre and postnatal exercise to my personal training repertoire and hope one day to be able to use what I learned to help other moms feel this way too!
Although I can’t take full credit. Nursing is sure nature’s wonder weight loss drug.

Sawyer: Month 2

Two months old already?

2013-10-14 17.59.152013-10-14 17.56.45

Oh how the time flies. In just a few weeks, my little newborn has morphed into a full-blown baby. He fits differently in my arms. His deep, blue eyes are almost always wide open and taking in all the world around him. His mouth opens into a huge smile when he sees mommy, daddy or Monkey. His head is always up, looking around, and I am amazed at how strong he is.

On September 25th he slept in his own room for the first time. Loved it. Four hours straight!

September 26th. Spit up for the first time after feeding.

He recognizes objects now, like his toys. His changing table, his play gym and his monkey are his favorites.

2013-10-06 10.09.19

Slept for 5 hours straight. Then didnt …

October 5: Did a little pushup and rolled from tummy to back. Repeatedly. OK, maybe it was more like falling from tummy to back.

October 11: Slept from 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. This was the night after mom finally cashed in her Mothers Day gift and redeemed that 1-hour massage gift certificate. Heavenly!

That afternoon he stayed with a babysitter for the first time too – his great aunt Diana.

October 14 grabbed a toy from his play gym and put it in his mouth.  This is big folks, big.

And, of course, he got his 2-month shots. Took it like a champ, only crying during the pokes. Afterwards we treated ourselves to ice cream. OK, mom treated herself. I was so brave! 😉

Our little punkin’

Saturday we wandered around the most amazing Pumpkin patch in Yuciapa, and as you can tell, had entirely too much fun.

This place was halloween on steroids. Acres of amusement park-type games, hay rides, magic shows, live music, two corn mazes, a petting zoo, food vendors, bounce houses, go carts, and, of course, acres of pickable pumpkins of all kinds.

We had a blast and almost wish that Sawyer was just a little older and could enjoy it more. Then again, mom and dad were having a great time 🙂

Happy Halloween!

Only the cute stuff

As a biased mother, I seem to think all the things my baby does are absolutely adorable. However, I’ve condensed the best of the best down to a top 10. Here is the cuteness countdown …

10. Sawyer has moved into his own room and is clocking about 4-hours straight these days.

2013-09-25 12.53.12

9. And he loves it! Every morning I get to see at least a few of these:

2013-09-30 08.52.11

8. Monkey is his best buddy. This toy can tame (almost) any tears

2013-10-07 18.13.11

2013-10-06 10.09.19

7. This

2013-10-03 15.46.59

6. He loves his books!

2013-10-03 19.21.19

5. And flexin’ those hand-eye coordination skills

4. And now that it’s fall, we’ve embraced the old man sweat pants look.

2013-10-04 07.04.57

3. POP! In goes the thumb at nap time.

2013-10-06 13.29.03

2. Time to bundle up!

2013-10-08 08.23.57

And go for a walk, big boy style!

2013-10-08 08.27.28

1. And (the cutest of the cute, in my opinion) he did some ghost bustin’

Looking Forward with Faith

Looking back, this blog is far more than the story of our adventures. It’s also the chronicle of our Heavenly Father’s hand in our lives. Well, in the coming year we will be embarking on one of our biggest and scariest adventures yet. We have a lot of faith that no matter where we end up, it will be where we are needed most.

With a one-month old baby on my lap, I clicked off applications more than 60 different categorical residency programs from New York to California and almost everywhere in between. There’s no use fighting it – my husband has the demeanor, talents and tendencies of a surgeon. In fact, that’s what David is spending his days and nights at Arrowhead doing now – sometimes for 35-hour stretches.

So we applied for every surgery residency that SGU grads have been accepted to throughout the past three years plus a dozen more for good measure. On top of these, David also tossed his name into the running for several plastic surgery residencies. We know it is a statistical long shot for foreign medical grads, but he really enjoys every aspect of the specialty.

We’ve worked hard. We’ve done our best. Now we wait.

This is a scary time for every future doctor whether foreign or stateside. Eight years of school, hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless hours of hard work come down to one little job offer.

As we look into the future and anticipate our next adventure, the view is a little hazy. We don’t know where we will be one year from now, what our cost of living will be or how we will make ends meet. Weighing heaviest on my mind is how I will help financially support our family with the added cost of child care for our little bundle of awesome.

Then I think back. We’ve dealt with uncertainty before and come out OK. Why should this time be any different? While we wait for all this uncertainty to clear up, we have a few things that won’t ever change: an eternal family and faith in Heavenly Father’s plan for us.

March 15 is the big day when we will finally know about a residency placement.

Remind me to look back on this post five months from now and see the blessings. 🙂

Sarah and Sawyer’s Excellent Adventure

You are welcome to call me crazy. Because I am.

On Sawyer’s one month birthday we set out on a 463-mile journey that took us though temper tantrums, beautiful countryside, roadside feeding sessions, six diapers and plenty of adventure.

Did I mention that an eight-hour trip can easily turn into a 12-hour trip with a kiddo? It’s true.

My sweet husband, rather than telling me I’m nutso, just nodded his head and agreed that I should go if I really wanted to. The occasion was both a childhood friend’s wedding and introducing my little one to someone I see as an incredible example before she moved away to Albuquerque, NM.

I’ll admit that it was probably a little naive to think an eight hour car ride could be good for a month old baby. But along the way we made some memories that will last a lifetime. Having a baby in the car taught me to really stop and smell the roses, put someone else’s needs far above my own and best of all it taught us both how to self soothe. Our sweet Sawyer can put himself to sleep like a pro now if he is tired enough. Winning.

It was a quick trip, but so worth it to see so many people I love and introduce them to the love of my life.

I already miss this girl so much. Our babies are only one month apart. I still remember meeting up fro FroYo and simultaneously saying, “I have something to tell you.” Nine months later, she is still one of my best friends and someone I really look up to. So glad our munchkins got to meet before our husband’s residencies scattered us to the four winds.

It was both strange and wonderful to see these two marry each other. I’ve known Brett since age eight and Amanda since our years together at Girls Camp, through college, hikes up Half Dome and beyond. So happy for them both!

One Month Old!

At one month old, our little Sawyer has already seen a lot of the world!

2013-09-13 13.18.56

On his one month birthday (September 13) he hopped in the car with mommy for a whirlwind adventure drive up to Reno where he saw Brett and Amanda get married and met all of mommy’s childhood friends. It was a birthday neither he nor I will ever forget.

At one month old he has:

  • Learned to self-soothe (OK, mom learned to LET him self soothe)
  • Rolled from tummy to back
  • Keeps his head up like a champ!
  • Scoots across the floor on his tummy like a little worm. Daddy likes to put him in the middle of a blanket and see how long it takes to get off.
  • Sept. 19 – Slept 5 hours straight!!
  • Starting to recognize toys

Happy one month Sawyer!

A Weekend Full of Blessings

Over Labor Day weekend our home was filled with family and friends who loved a little bundle of baby. They came both for Sawyer and to be a part of his baby blessing – the first official step in his progression as a good, Christ-centered man (similar to a christening).

Our little man loved the constant snuggles from friends, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, Great Grandparents, Great aunts, Great uncles and great cousins. Everyone was in the same place at the same time, which is a pretty rare occurrence. The weekend was a treasured memory we will enjoy forever.

An itty-bitty birthday

Having eight pounds of wiggle around the house is kinda fun. Grandma C came up with the adorable idea to have an itty-bitty birthday party for our sweet Sawyer.

2013-08-15 20.17.35

Sawyer’s First Itty-Bitty Birthday Party Menu:

  • Sliders
  • Mini Grapes
  • Chicken Wings (because his little legs oddly resemble them 😉
  • Tater Tots
  • Mini Apple Pies with Single Serve Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream
  • Stubby corn
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Mini Arrowhead waters

That night was a fun memory I will treasure forever. Happy “Birthday” Sawyer! You might be little, but you hold the biggest place in our hearts.
