The Good Stuff

The medical school life and I are having a little tiff at the moment. OK, I’ll be honest. It’s on the receiving end of red-headed hormonal fury.

It’s easy to let the stressful stuff take over sometimes. But if it does, I think I’ll end up forgetting about all the amazing things. With all the stress of repaying loans, applying for residencies and raising a child looming ever nearer, these are the moments that I want to remember. No matter how hot this little pressure cooker called life gets, this is the good stuff.

  • I want to remember David’s face when, one lazy evening, he finally heard our baby’s heartbeat through his own stethoscope pressed to my tummy.
  • I want to remember cooling off by the pool because we didn’t want to run our expensive AC and the excuse it gave us to talk like BFFs for hours.
  • My mom reassuring me, “The munchkin knew where he was coming and what he was in for and he wanted to come anyway.” 🙂
  • Kneeling in prayer and knowing that a loving Heavenly Father always has and always will watch out for me.
  • Playing with baby for the first time as I repeatedly pressed my ice water to my tummy and he kicked it off.
  • Curling up in a corner of Barnes and Noble and reading silly kids books … to our little fetus.

Now go hug your SGU doctor and/or make his spouse a thank you card. Maybe it will be a moment that means so much, they write about it on their blog …

How we started a nursery

With nothing else to do, I have succumb to the urge to nest.

It’s OK if you laugh hysterically. I am finding it pretty funny myself that the universe decided to take the least domestic person it could find, give her a negative net worth, get her pregnant and give her urges to decorate.

What follows is a gratuitous collection of completely impractical things I have done to make baby’s half of the room a little more fun.

2013-06-08 15.25.14

I may or may not be nursing my child in a pillow-padded office chair. Hey dual use, and it matches!

2013-06-08 15.25.36

CraigsList dresser/changing table in awesome shape for $50. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the fantastic thing that happens when you become a CraigsList troll.

2013-06-08 15.25.45

Monkey wall decals courtesy of the kind-hearted Stephanie Scurlock. She offered a spare gift certificate at the exact moment my mental sanity needed a pick-me-up. Not only is it exactly what I wanted, but seeing it on the wall also reminds me of a friend’s caring. The floating shelves are $5 blank wood name plates from the Michael’s toll painting section attached with a $3 pack of L brackets. Bevelled edges and everything looks pretty snazy. Sneaky sneaky.

The mobile was the biggest pain in my posterior possible. The afternoon it took to make deserves a whole post to itself. But just to spite it, I’m not going to give it one. Neener neener inanimate object! The frame of fake jungle ferns suspended by hemp supports several strands of tissue paper flowers and paper leaves. I essentially wanted something to both liven up the room and distract my cranky child in the event of an unplanned awakening. Hopefully he will be ADD just like his … ohh, llama. 😉

Oh, the bassinet. My favorite part of our home hands down. Once upon a time, my husband slept inside it’s hand-crafted frame. His milkaholic ways quickly grew him out of it and into a grown man who will be bringing his own baby home now. When he was still just a punch monkey in his mother’s tummy, David’s dad carefully cut and measured each piece of wood and built the bassinet.  It’s just larger than your average basinet, so we plan to get as much mileage as we can out of it.Thanks grandpa Glenn for letting us use it.

The closet organizer. $16 at Walmart. Yes, it was on the clearance table, the box barely strapped together with packing tape. But after dusting off the grass remnants from the last owner, it was in perfect shape. I am soooooo thankful that it is already filled with a decent stockpile of diapers and clothes from my mom. Our child will have a safe place to poo, and when he performs that task a little too well, he will have several cute options to keep him clean and stylish 🙂

TMI? Well, you asked for it people.

Baby Bump Update: 29 and Feelin’ Fine

The third trimester is officially in full swing and enough has changed that a little update is in order.

How are ya feeling these days?

Like a whale! Previously nausea kept me from running, jumping and playing like I used to. Now, my expanding belly’s simple mechanics are getting in the way. But, oh I will take anything other than that crazy nausea! Other than that, I’m just super tired all the time.

Any stretch marks with that big belly?

Nope! Knock on wood.

Craving anything in particular?

Frozen grapes ROCK MY WORLD!

How did that gestational diabetes test turn out?

Beautifully! No problems on that front. But the little man still doesn’t seem to like milk (ironic if you know his dad), ice cream or too many sweets – he hucks them right back up.

Alright, but you must at least have cankles and swollen hands, right?

Nope. 🙂 Rings are still on and shoes are still fitting OK. However, my shifting center of balance is making the stilettos an adventure.

So what ARE your symptoms?

That big belly has finally reduced my bladder to the size of a pea (I belong in a pun-itentiary). For a few weeks, I also had the pleasure of imitating an old man when I got up off the couch by groaning, “Oh my sciatica!” But an active lifestyle has nipped that in the bud. I am a hottie, in the most literal sense. Hormones have boosted my internal temps to near nuclear.  The heartburn is killer and bananas seem to set it aflame. I am super tired these days and I seriously cannot wait to meet this little one. It’s either hormones or motherhood kicking in, but that little punch monkey in my tummy has become the center of my world.

Dish on all the crazy moments:

My bulbous belly now attracts the random crazy in the grocery store who wants to touch it. The “belly feelers” who are missing at least one tooth and have at least one nose ring happen to be endowed with this great gift of knowing my baby’s gender (it’s a girl in their opinion). The kicks have become so strong that I can wake up the huz with a nice belly snuggle. 🙂 And I officially waddle.

Our simple nursery is coming together as well. Pics coming soon!

You know you are in med school when …

  • The bed is never made because someone is always sleeping in it.
  • You use terms like “Gen Surg” and “Surg Onc” in every day conversations and mistakenly believe that you do not sound like a goose. You do.
  • Everything is abbreviated.
  • You can look at $250,000 in loan debt and resist the urge to pee your pants and/or sob hysterically.
  • Dinner conversations involve graphic depictions of blood, guts and all types of nasty – and you are OK with that.
  • Diner conversations rarely happen.
  • Just for fun/practice, your husband performs the entire 27-week prenatal exam prior to the doc actually entering the room. (Yes, that did happen)
  • The little fun moments you get together are the best moments ever.

I am starting to get used to all this, probably meaning that another med school curveball is on its way!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Recently we became the owners of a little enclosed concrete slab outside our back door. The landlords like to call it a patio. The first few weeks, we called it something else much less complimentary.

But now, it is our garden!

To flex our green thumb we planted strawberries, tomatoes, peas and my favorite little honeysuckle bush.

Four little tomatoes are budding and on their way!

We were able to enjoy our first red, ripe strawberries this past weekend and have several more ripening on the way.

This is only the beginning for our little backyard garden – Sarah has big plans!

Something old, something new

On May 17th, we were able to celebrate the wedding of my cousin (once removed) Nicole and her prince charming Eric and send them laughing and goofing together into married bliss.

Her big day brought together family that hadn’t been together in years. My mom, her siblings and their children (only missing one) were finally all in the same room again, reminding us of childhood memories.

As children, the cousins would all gather at “PaPa Hat’s” house. And while my great grandpa would fret over all us cousins getting into his rose garden, we would be in childhood heaven digging, exploring and getting dirty on the hill behind his small home.

The Saturday after the wedding we all gathered at a local park, explored little river that ran through it and caught up on several years of togetherness.

It was a wonderful weekend to remember our something old, and celebrate Nicole’s something new.

The Quietest Mothers Day Of Them All

I didn’t hear the pitter patter of little feet this mothers day – although I sure felt them bouncing on my bladder!

It was a sweet experience to take a day and reflect on what it means to be a mother, while the screaming baby beast is still contained in-utero. David has been my greatest support through this crazy roller coaster of hormones, weight gain and sickness. Sunday he helped again by making me breakfast, padding my ego all day and giving me a wonderful massage gift certificate.

But the best gift of all was when he gave me a hug and told me he loved me.

We are on one crazy road and those special days on the calendar might have big targets on them. Our anniversary was one that got shot right in the kisser this year by a crazy day at the hospital. But mothers day made me feel like as long as we have those “I Love Yous”, in the end, we are going to be OK.

Happy mothers day!

Three years later …

May 7th marked three years together. In that time we have lived in three different countries, four different apartments (plus many stints with family in between) and grown closer as a couple.

Being married to a medical student can be a roller coaster. But I am glad that I get to take that ride with someone who loves me so much.

After a long weekend, Tuesday was a crazy day for both of us. A long day at the hospital ended with both our traditional eggs benedict anniversary meal – and more work to do.

2013-05-07 19.21.37

I think after three years, I finally found a good recipe and this year’s creation was pretty darn good. Here’s the link to the recipe. For anyone who knows me and my *love* of cooking (cough cough sarcasm), this complicated recipe is a true labor of love.

Another tradition is to try on my wedding dress every year to see if I still fit. The impending arrival of a little munchkin made this year’s attempt slightly comical.

Happy anniversary my dear. I am lucky to have you!

“Because She is a Mother”

Every step toward motherhood is daunting. Amid the seemingly constant (self-induced) blast of Pinterest ideas, developmental methods, career pressures and blog posts about posh nurseries-to-be, these words of wisdom were needed and refreshing.

Holland’s touching words remind me that with a reliance on God our inadequacies “are made whole”.

“In speaking of mothers generally, I especially wish to praise and encourage young mothers. The work of a mother is hard, too often unheralded work. The young years are often those when either husband or wife—or both—may still be in school or in those earliest and leanest stages of developing the husband’s breadwinning capacities. Finances fluctuate daily between low and nonexistent. The apartment is usually decorated in one of two smart designs—Deseret Industries provincial or early Mother Hubbard. The car, if there is one, runs on smooth tires and an empty tank. But with night feedings and night teethings, often the greatest challenge of all for a young mother is simply fatigue. Through these years, mothers go longer on less sleep and give more to others with less personal renewal for themselves than any other group I know at any other time in life. It is not surprising when the shadows under their eyes sometimes vaguely resemble the state of Rhode Island.

Do the best you can through these years, but whatever else you do, cherish that role that is so uniquely yours and for which heaven itself sends angels to watch over you and your little ones. … Remember, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

22 Week Pregnancy Update

It’s getting real around here folks!

Now to answer all your burning questions:

1. Showing much yet?

Judge for yourself 🙂

2013-04-13 14.20.07

2.  How’s the nausea?

Meh, not bad. I still have my moments but thankfully the “throne worship” has decreased to about once a day.

3. Is he moving?

Um, is he ever NOT moving? I was so excited about the little tiny kicks that I downloaded a kick counter app on my phone. I have since thrown in the towel even trying to track them now. He seems to do a little belly jig (lots of little kicks) on average about five or six times a day. Whacked his daddy in the head one night while he was trying to listen. That was fun. They are still those sweet little (non-painful) butterfly kiss kind of kicks. But Dave is pretty sure he felt something! Early mornings, just before bed and after I eat seem to be his favorite times to play. Wonder if that is foreshaddowing anything …

4. Are you going to get stretch marks like everyone else?

I hope not! At least they aren’t showing up yet. Come on Palmers CoCo Butter, don’t let me down!

5. Weight gain?

Yes, it has happened. I have gained almost 15 lbs. Fifteen more and I will be the fattest I have ever been my whole life. Don’t ask. Sophomore year of college was hell.

6. Names?

None. Not even close. Still haven’t even discussed it yet.

7. Alright, dish on all the crazy preggers lady moments …

I claim that my crazy moments are not entirely my own fault. Babies suck the brains right out of ya! There have been a few moments when I feel about as intelligent as Jessica Simpson during her famous “Chicken of the Sea” incident. If you have been on the receiving end of one of my many insensitive brain fart moments, I sincerely apologize. Sometimes I sit back and think, did I really just say that? Just know that I love you and anything insensitive was completely unintentional. 🙂
